THE PURPOSE OF READING
A student poses this question to his master:
"I have read many books and forgotten most of them; but then what is the purpose of reading?"
The teacher did not respond at that moment; however, a few days later, while he and the young student were sitting by a river, he said he was thirsty and asked the child to bring him water using an old, dirty sieve that was lying on the ground.
The student started in surprise because he knew it was an illogical request.
However, he could not contradict his master and, after picking up the sieve, he began to carry out this absurd task.
Every time he dipped the sieve into the river to bring a little water to his master, he couldn't even take a step toward him because not a single drop remained in the sieve.
He tried and tried dozens of times, but even if he tried to run faster from the riverbank to his master, the water continued to pass through all the holes in the sieve and was lost along the way.
Exhausted, he sat down beside the Master and said:
"I can't fetch water with this sieve; forgive me, master, it's impossible and I have failed in my duties."
"No!" said the smiling old man-"you have not failed.
Look at the sieve: now it shines, it's clean, like new. The water, seeping through its holes, has washed it clean.
"When you read books," the old Master continued, "you are like a sieve and they are like river water.
It doesn't matter if you can't retain in your memory all the water they let flow into you, because books, with their ideas, their emotions, their feelings, their knowledge, and the truth you will find between the pages, will cleanse your mind and spirit, and make you a better and renewed person.
That is the purpose of reading."
