MMR, measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine.

If you have this scar, you're part of a very large club.

Do you know which childhood vaccine caused it and why it stays for life? 🤔

This is the former BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine for TB (tuberculosis).

This vaccine is usually given to babies in many countries (including Indonesia, India, and other developing countries) to prevent severe forms of TB in children such as TB meningitis or millionnaire TB.

How it works: This vaccine is injected into the skin (intradermal) on the upper arm, usually using a small needle that makes “many points”. The normal reaction: a lump appears, then blisters, scabs, and finally heals into a small round scar (like in the photo) that is permanent. The scars remain for life because it is a sign that the vaccine has successfully triggered the immune response in the skin.

It’s not a smallpox vaccine, even though the shape of the scars is similar. Smallpox vaccine has rarely been used since the eradication of smallpox in the 1980s. BCG is still widely used until now.

Do you have it too?

There are so many who have it, including me. 😊 In Nigerian, this is part of the standard baby immunisation.

Anyone else checking their arm right now?
